There are generally two types of storm windows. One which are permanent and expensive and the other one are those made up of vinyl and other degradable material and are temporary and inexpensive. The permanent storm windows are generally of higher quality and would rarely require any servicing but in case they do need any, then repairing storm windows won’t cost you much. The first thing that should be taken care of while repairing the storm windows is the screen which is generally the most expensive part of a storm window. They should be carefully detached at first from the frame and then laid down on a soft surface and cleaned and polished with a garden hose or a soft cloth and a sprinkler. The next step is to remove the storm window frame by loosening the screws. Once the screws come out then a little bit of force may be required in order to take the frame out. Once the frame comes out then you can go for thorough cleaning of the interior and the exterior parts of the frame and storm windows. The interior parts are generally inaccessible and hence cleaner and won’t take much of your time. You can then apply silicon lubricant on the sides of the screen in order to dissolve aluminum oxide so that the screen can slide when opening or closing it. Dried or old caulk must be removed at the edges while reinstalling the window back by using alcohol as a solvent. Then after reinstalling your window back you can apply 2 coats of metal primer with a gap of two hours between them. As a last step you must caulk the edges of your storm window. You can also apply paint to your storm window after it is fully fixed. You may require giving as many as 3 coats of paint in order to obtain a smooth finish.
